Hugh had three sons: Reginald, Borthwick, and Archibald. At Hugh's death, the Renfrewshire lands were inherited by Reginald, the eldest son, who deeded them to his eldest son Hugh Fitz-Reginald, circa 1225. Others holding the estate were Finlay of Houston (circa 1290), Patrick of Houston (d. 1450), John Houston (d. 1456), Peter Houston (d. 1513), Patrick Houston (d. 1526), John Houston (d. 1542), Patrick Houston (d. 1605), John Houston (d. 1609), Ludovick Houston (d. 1662), Patrick Houston (d. 1696), John Houston (d. 1717), John Houston (d. 1722), John Houston (d. 1751). The estate was transferred to this last John Houston's uncle, John Shaw, in 1740, but he also died in 1751.
A branch of the Houston family held nearby lands at Johnstone, some two miles from the original Houston estate, bequeathed to George Houston, second son of Ludovick Houston. Yet another landholding was that of George Houston who married Janet Cunningham during the reign of James IV (1488-1513), and was located in the parishes of Erskine and Kilallin.
