Historic Lincoln County, Kentucky represents one of the earliest settled areas west of the Cumberland Gap, with many locales settled before, during, or shortly after the American Revolution, when the area was still part of the Virginia Colony. Some of Kentucky's famous early settlers made their homes in the area, many of which survive or have been restored. While the county remains rural, it's history encompasses a great area, since it began as one of the three original counties of Kentucky, and spawned numerous others before it took on its present boundaries.

One of three original counties
Nearly centrally located within the state, Lincoln County is nestled in the Southern Knobs region of Kentucky, and is one of the earliest settled regions of the state. Lincoln is one of the three original counties drawn from the original Kentucky County of Virginia, its boundaries laid in 1780, well before Kentucky statehood. Beyond the Cumberland Gap, the Wilderness Road brought frontiersmen into Lincoln County and Logan's Station , the settlement founded by Benjamin Logan which was one of the early stopovers for incoming families.
